Top tips for trimming your beard at home

One of the biggest things that many of us have learnt over the past 18 months is that there are many things that we used to have to pay a visit to a professional for that we can take care of at home.  Here are some top tips for trimming your beard at home.

Facial hair grooming is one example of this. However, whilst you can take care of and trim your beard at home, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it is easy to do. Things can go wrong, and you can end up not quite getting the results that you want.

So, to help you make the most of your at-home efforts, here are our top tips for trimming your beard at home.

Wash your beard

The first thing you should always do is make sure that you keep your beard nice and clean. When a beard is washed and conditioned, it will be friendly and soft, which means that it will look nicer and much easier to trim.

There are lots of excellent beard shampoo and conditioners for you to choose from, and you are sure to find precisely the scent or design you are looking for.

Give it a good brush

Once you have given your beard a good wash and let it dry, you need to provide it with a brush. It is important to make sure that you brush against the grain; this will help the hair stand up and out. Doing this means that they are much easier to trim and will also highlight any differences in the length.

Get to trimming

Next, you need to tackle trimming your beard. It is a good idea to try and start longer rather than shorter as you can always trim more away, but you cannot add hair once it is trimmed. The more straightforward that you are cutting your beard then, the less chance you will make a mistake, but it can still happen.  This all depends on what style you are aiming for.

Shape is everything

If you want to add some shape to your beard, then there are plenty of ways to do this. Although the best approach to take (and the one that will be the most flattering on any face shape) is to keep the hairs around your actual chin longer, then trim the hairs shorter around the sides of your face.

Around your neckline can be tricky to get right, but there are things that you can do to make it easier for yourself. The best thing to do is to aim either slightly above or below your Adam’s Apple, as this will give you just the right shape.   Remember style is everything.

Clear the hairs on your top lip

You also need to pay attention to the hairs on your top lip; else, your moustache is going to look untamed compared to your beard. The best tool for trimming your moustache is to use a pair of beard or moustache scissors, as they will be the easiest to use and give you the best results in what can be a tricky area to trim.

Finish with oil

The last step of trimming your beard is to apply a good quality oil. This will help moisturise your hair and skin and make sure that your hair always looks its best. It also makes sure that you smell great too.

Trimming your beard at home is a great way to keep on top of it, so why not give it a try and see if you can feel great about the way that you look. From head to toe.
